Northern Lights: Return to Whitewall
A Sibling Reunion
Xeno brushed her knuckles against the door, lightly. She waited, one, two, then started walking back down the hallway. After about four steps she stopped took a deep breath and went back to the door. She waved her fist in front of the door, drew in a quick breath then went back towards the stairs. The rehearsal knocking went on for some minutes.
From inside the bedroom she heard, “Hey little lady, stop tromping around out there and come say hello.”
“If your too tired, I could come back.”
“Xeno, come in, gods damn it.” Reyo’s tone was joking but he did sound tired.
Slowly, Xeno pushed the door open. The room was small with low ceilings. There were a pair of tall windows.
Xeno crossed her hands behind her head. She made the room seem smaller. “This is how Autochthon felt, cramped. Except there was no sunlight and there were signs everywhere. It was so strange there.” Xeno stared out the window then at the floor. “We went to another world brother. All the people had these strange marks and there was a horrible machine and terrible cake. We fought a evil monster and defeated him. And they showered us with gifts and…” Xeno trailed off. Finally, she looked at Reyo. He was sitting up in a small bed in the corner of the room. “So, you’re okay? I thought, when I saw what happened to the city…” Xeno looked out the window again. Through she could see the giant wall of metal that had crushed a quarter of the city. “I couldn’t…if something had happened to you while I was gone…” She rubbed at her eye with the back of her hand.
